While it is normal to lecture for an hour at a time in a face-to-face class, an hour video is far too long for most students. The recommendation is to chunk your information into 7-12 minute segments so you do not overwhelm them and it is easier to find and rerecord information.

Because you are capturing a video that belongs to another person, this would actually be a form of copyright infringement. It would be better to link the video separately in your Canvas course to avoid this.

The amount of recorded lecture time for an online course varies depending on the program.

• The Bachelor's for Professionals program requires a maximum of 2 clock hours of recorded lecture content for an 8-week course.
• According to the School of Management (SoM) policy, only the Executive MBA (EMBA) and M.S. in Financial Planning programs are exempt from the latest course development requirements. These programs follow Carnegie hours and do not have a specified amount of required recorded lecture time. All other graduate programs follow the latest course development requirements and should include no more than 2 clock hours of recorded lecture content for an 8-week course.

As a general guideline, we recommend approximately one hour of recorded lecture per week. However, the appropriate amount should ultimately be determined by your instructional goals, the variety of learning materials you provide, and the overall student workload.

If your program does not have specific requirements or you would like guidance on determining the appropriate amount of recorded lecture content for your course, please consult with our instructional designer.

You are not required to write a script for your recorded lectures, but you are strongly encouraged to do so. A script will keep you on track, prevent lengthy tangents, and excessive filler words (um's, uh's, ah's). Overall it provides a cleaner lecture for your students.

More often than not, this problem is caused by watching your videos in an internet browser other than Firefox. If watching in Firefox does not solve the problem, please reach out to the help desk at helpdesk@CalLutheran.edu.
