Marcela G. Cuellar, PhD
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), broadly defined by a 25% Latine undergraduate enrollment, now comprise 20% of all colleges and universities in the United States. As HSIs are eligible for competitive federal grants to enhance educational opportunities, these institutions are in a unique position to transform institutional structures and practices to better meet the needs of for Latine and historically underserved students. Marcela G. Cuellar, PhD, will discuss how institutional leaders, faculty and staff can elevate servingness to promote the educational advancement of students at HSIs.
Cuellar is an associate professor and Chancellor’s fellow in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis. Her research examines Latine students’ experiences and outcomes at HSIs and emerging HSIs, campus climate and community college baccalaureates. She currently is collaborating on projects examining Hispanic-Serving Research Institutions and community college bachelor’s degree programs in California. Her scholarship has been published in the Community College Review, Journal of Higher Education and the American Journal of Education.
