Prufrock's Days of Hands
Photographs by Tim Bradley
California Lutheran University is pleased to present Prufrock’s Days of Hands, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based photographer Tim Bradley. Developed over the past decade from Bradley's archive spanning 45 years, the project creates a visual dialogue with T. S. Eliot's seminal poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
First encountered in high school, Eliot's poem resurfaced for Bradley during his father's final months, when the phrase "days of hands" compelled him to walk the streets of Los Angeles with a small film camera. The resulting images capture gestures of touching, reaching and holding that echo the poem's meditations on agency, connection and longing.
The series extends beyond street photography: Bradley revisits his archive, cutting and reassembling negatives to create fragmented composites that challenge traditional ideas of the photographic frame and decisive moment. Each photograph is paired with torn pages from Eliot's poem, marked with graphite to slow the reader's pace and open a space between word and image.
Prufrock's Days of Hands is both homage and transformation, bringing a literary masterwork into the present. In Bradley's hands, camera, scissors and poem converge to explore influence, mortality and renewal.
The Artist Reception will be 3-5 p.m. Oct. 16.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visit the website for more information.
